“(Reuters Health) – Middle-aged and older adults who get the flu vaccine may be less likely to suffer a first-time heart attack in the following year than those who skip the shot, according to a study published Monday.”

Interesting. So the reduction in risk is what? 5%? 10%? Nope: 19%! That’s big. The findings need to be replicated, but 19% is a pretty huge effect.

I had the flu October 9, 2009

I had the flu last week. I had already been coughing for a few days, but I had no other symptoms. On Monday afternoon I started to get a headache, sore throat, aches and pains, and extreme fatigue. I didn’t develop a fever until Wednesday. By Saturday, I was symptom free except for fatigue.

Two of my kids had it too. My 9 year old son had fever for 3 days, then none for two days and it returned the next day after that and continued for 3 or 4 more days. I thought it was a secondary respiratory infection but the doctor took a listen and his lungs were OK. He’s better now.

My daughter and I stayed home for a week, and my son a week and a half. I wonder how people will manage to keep their kids at home for so long. I think they won’t. I think kids will show up at school and day care while they are still contagious because the parents have to go to work.

I had heard that Ontario was considering delaying seasonal flu shots until after the H1N1 shots, but it seems most of Canada is now following the same practice, even though the details of the study are still a mystery because it’s under review for publication. What a mess if the reviewers reject the paper! full story
